Spring cleaning is on everyone’s mind and what to do with all those used paperbacks that aren’t keepers is everyone’s dilemma. Take a cue from today’s Queen B’ Janet — she and her friends go out of their way to collect books and bring them to seniors.

“I read a lot and so do most of my friends. We frequent library sales and garage sales and buy tons of books. When we are done with them, I collect bags of them from my friends and take them to local senior centers. They love when I show up with them. Never throw away books. There is always someone who is happy for something new to read.”
Every weekend we bring you examples of women who find creative, meaningful ways to give. Click ‘comments’ above and tell us what you do! You might be featured here as an inspiration next Saturday.

I volunteer daily tutoring struggling first grade readers at our local elementary school. I am working on my Master’s in Reading Education and am putting what I studying to a practical use. The kids are from socio-economically disadvantaged homes and don’t have books in the homes, and some are English Language Learners. My 12-year-old daughter and I work with an equine therapy program which provides therapy for special needs children (Autistic, MR, Down’s, etc) and at-risk adolescents. I also serve on a community advisory board for our local school district and am helping them develop a volunteer program. Our hope is to develop this program into a 501(c)3 non-profit so we can have a full-time coordinator and have a concerted, coordinated volunteer effort on all of our campuses, including a mentor program for our at-risk students.
This is a great idea!!
