We never give up. (It can be kind of an annoying habit or a great strength–depends who you ask.) Anyway, we have this vision– the greatest piece of installation art on a Facebook fan page ever! We like to live without rules, be on the edge, we don’t know of anyone else doing this–besides this is FREE entertainment. Like all great art we’ve given it a cool post modern name: Video Contest: Script #1. Script you ask? Yes we going to give you two sentences that we want you to start your video with, the idea behind this is that we are a united community of struggling B’s all with the same problem. But each and every one of us although we share the same human struggle of being ‘bitches on a budget’ has their own unique way to look at this and we want to know what it is.
Video yourself (nothing X rated please) and post your videos here (click on the comments section right below the title of this post). As they come in we’ll re-post them on our fan page . You’ll be able to watch everyones and then we’re going to figure out a way to have everyone vote on their favorite videos. (Still working on it) Here it is start practicing your script:
Hi. My name is _______. I’m a Bitch on a Budget. Yesterday I went out and bought ________ and today I’m ashamed. Here’s what happened (share your sad tale of buyers remorse):_________________.
Finish your video with: Bitches on a Budget–I need help.
Lights, camera, action.
Contest #5: Re-Purpose The Ordinary—Beauty Secrets of Savvy B’s

Our high school biology teacher used to tell us that shampoo was a “Madison Avenue lie.” He’d stand before the class, proudly stroke his overgrown bowl haircut, and say, “Look! I wash my hair with ivory soap and it comes out fine!”
OK, he was a little crazy, and we won’t go so far as to recommend using bar soap on your tresses (ugh!), but dear Mr. Fitz did have something of a point. He instilled in us a cynical eye… a desire to be empowered consumers, not to be lured by silly marketing or brand names… and to think about how products marketed for one thing can be used in other ways.
Case in point?
We’ve learned that cheap, tear-free baby shampoo doubles as a killer eye-makeup remover. That in a pinch, a dab of toothpaste dries up a zit. That on a warm day, an easy deep conditioning treatment involves coating hair in olive oil, wrapping it in plastic wrap, and sitting in the sun.
We’ve been known to use moisturizer as a hair gel and we have friends who swear that diluted apple cider vinegar is an amazing facial toner.
Now it’s your turn. How do you re-purpose ordinary products to extraordinary effects? What ‘off-brand’ uses do you find for the stuff in your cabinets?
(While we’re all for creativity, please no active ingredient chemical/prescription thingy’s that may do more harm than good–you know, like birth control pills ground with mortar and pestle, mixed with shave cream, and used as an insect repellent.)

Saturday is the day we share your stories about giving to others.
Please write in and tell us about what you do for others. Do you spend time caring for aging parents or ill relatives? Do you volunteer in a soup kitchen, at a school, a nursing home, or a pet shelter? Work in your community garden, at your local library, clear litter from the side of the road? Add your story in the comment section in the upper right of this post.
Today, Becky Haugh reminds us about blood donation: a way to give without spending a dime.
She writes:
I’m… a big advocate of blood donation…. I’ve never personally been a recipient of a blood transfusion or have known someone close to need one – but since the husband and myself really can’t drop large checks to charity, we try to give in ways that aren’t monetary in nature. For me, it’s donating blood. If you plan it out right, you can donate blood up to 6 times per year. I’m going to try to hit 6 donations this year. Sure, it’s not much, but you can’t buy blood and so many people (in this country and abroad) need blood – especially when you are a funky O type like myself.

BETHANY DAVIS!
For sheer bargain savvy plus educational value, nothing beats the entry submitted by Bethany, who took her young son and his friends to the fire station. For the price of cake and drinks, these kiddos got a wildly memorable afternoon. (And moms got to watch hunky fireman getting dressed/undressed, a nice bonus.)
She wrote:
When my son was getting ready to turn 3 years old, he was very into fire trucks… I called the fire station that was closest to our neighborhood and asked for their assistance… They offered to let us tour the fire station and have his birthday party at the fire station/house as well. On the day of his birthday, all the kids arrived (boys and girls, ages 1-6) and the firemen took over. They started the tour and showed us every part of the fire station. They even showed us their living quarters, kitchen and recreation area. (READ BETHANY’S FULL ENTRY, ALONG WITH OUR HONORABLE MENTIONS, ON THE DROP-A-DIME PAGE).

We received so many impressive entries to our DIY contest. One woman stood out in particular. A Texan… a natural-born DIYer… a smart, savvy, creative, hands-on bitch whose willingness to take on big home projects really impressed us. Ladies, meet Shaelyn Neal.
Her job title? Chief Creative Chick.
That’s our kind of woman.
Here’s how she describes herself:
I’m good ol’ Texas girl, mother of 4 awesome kids and married to an amazing man who cooks My mom was the QUEEN of budget bitches – and I mean that in a good way. I have money saving in the blood.
I was a corporate event planner for 15 years until I started my own invitation design and photography business. So now I commute 10 seconds upstairs to my studio and have lots of time to shuttle my kids around and truly do what I love. I also get to hire stay-at-home moms who are super artistic and crafty to help with my production – which gives them a chance to earn money AND stay home with their kids. Win-win all the way around.
And here’s her wisdom about doing it yourself:
I think so many women are a little intimidated about taking on home improvement beyond hanging pictures and setting up their shoe racks. A few years ago, one of my co-workers was telling me about how she was rebuilding her entire porch – HERSELF! All I could think of was – holy crap, I’d never be able to do that. So I’d ask her about a few repairs I needed done around the house and she told me she knew I could do it. Well, she gave me enough confidence that I figured I probably could (and of course I kept her on my speed dial in case I totally screwed it up). Well, what do you know – I installed my first light fixture without electrocuting myself, and I never looked back.
Here is the message that I think all good DIY bitches need to know. The main thing you have to do is just stop being AFRAID. Take on a small project first. Once you get a taste of success, than put on your big girl panties and try something a little harder. I figure that I might as well try it – if I screw it up too bad, then I’ll call the repair person I was going to call in the first place. So far I haven’t destroyed my house and I’ve saved over $700 in installation fees – and that’s a big chunk of change sista! I’ve installed my own garbage disposal, kitchen faucet, dishwasher, and new lighting and sink fixtures in almost every room of my house. Let me tell you – the absolute thrill I get every time I turn on my garbage disposal or run my fabulous new dishwasher is better than a shoe sale at Macy’s! Not only have I saved a ton of money – but I’ve learned something new and shown myself that I can do anything I set my mind to.
A lot of my friends tell me they have no idea how to start a project. In this day and age there is so much information out there—it’s amazing how easy it can be. My first major install was my garbage disposal – granted, it took me three hours to get it put in, and I’m sure my plumber would have laughed his ass off if saw me. I am sitting under my sink with the instructions from the disposal, printouts from an online guide, and my laptop with about three YouTube videos queued up. But hey – I saved $200 and had a pretty good time doing it.
My next project is re-tiling my master bath shower and bath- that one is a little scary so I hired someone to do it AND teach me at the same time. – I’ll keep you posted
Yes, stay in touch Shealyn. You’ve inspired us, and probably lots of our readers. One question: Can we keep you on speed dial?

DIY Winner is… Kim!

We never imagined how hard it’d be to pick a winner of the DIY contest! Oh my. So many amazing entries…. so many thrifty, hands-on bitches. From appliance installation to jewelry making to curtain design to furniture refinishing to one vodka recipe that got us licking our lips….
After much debate we selected a winner, but we think other entries need to be highlighted too, so check back regularly for more about the “runner-ups”!
Without further ado. Our winner is Kim of Atlanta, Georgia. Here’s how she describes herself:
“I’m a mid-to-late 20’s modern Southern lady living in Atlanta, Georgia where I work in the field of international sports journalism for a big ol’ cable network. I’m a natural DIY-er; when I was little I liked to salvage mundane things and try to make them more interesting (yes, a lot of glitter and glue was involved). I also loved to thrift shop for the clothes and objects I wanted- because it would stretch my allowance money! These days, I make a little more than that five bucks a week- but it’s still fun and important to figure out ways to be financially conscientious (without skimping on life’s luxuries) and to recognize I have the power to do many things for myself.”
Here’s her DIY entry:
I haven’t been to a hair salon in about two years and my hair looks better than ever. I discovered forum.blackhairmedia.com where professional stylists mingle with do it yourselfer’s, and I’ve now (more…)
